Top 5 Natural Sunblock Picks

Natural beauty means taking care of your skin. Don't sacrifice time in the sun because you don't want to apply nasty chemicals. Let's take a look at the best sunscreens for your skin.

Where I'm from in New Zealand, the sun is tenacious. We have a depressingly high rate of skin cancer and burn time is a measly ten minutes. It hardly makes it worth it going out at all.

However, we all need our daily intake of Vitamin D, even if we only get nine minutes of it. This means, then, that we have to take preventative measures.

I've found it really hard to find a sunblock that doesn't feel like body paint and isn't going to cost me the earth - double meaning there. Sunblock skin remedies seem to be in short supply - the priority, after all, is covering up. Also, because I'm a natural beauty person, I can't get my sunscreen in my foundation or primer. I have to hunt down a good old fashioned, plain old sunscreen that's going to shield my skin from the sun and nothing more.

So, that is what I did. And this wouldn't be an alternative and holistic health service if I didn't share my findings with you. So without further ado, let's take a look at my top picks for natural sunblocks:

1. Arbonne/ABC Arbonne Baby

Arbonne and Arbonne baby sunblock are two great contenders to begin with. I bought both together - one for me, one for my babies - and have really enjoyed using both. Of course they don't include any typical nasty chemicals. One of the best things about the Arbonne sunblock is that you can use it on your face and body. It's non-greasy formula makes it feel great when applying and you can't even tell that you've got sunblock on when it's all rubbed in.

2. Dirty Hippie

This one is for the locals, so I apologise if you're not from New Zealand. Dawn is an absolute magician when it comes to her skin remedies and potions for natural beauty. Located in the small town of Waipu, she makes everything she sells by hand. She has three different types of sunblock - Sunscreen Extra Sensitive, Just Sunscreen, and Sunscreen with Bug Repellent. All completely natural, of course, and all completely appealing.

3. Invisible Zinc

Invisible Zinc is a great option if you're someone, like me, who has fair skin and needs an added layer of protection. Their mineral zinc oxide is a great way to protect your skin from the sun, naturally. I would say that this sunblock is the thickest on the list, so again if you're extra sensitive to the sun, this is a good pick. They have a wide variety of sunscreens to choose from, including face, tinted daywear, junior, and extra SPF. Check out their sunscreen here.

4. Skinnies Sunscreen

Skinnies is a relatively new brand of sunscreen that is still in its teething stages. It's now expanded into the USA and is taking the nation by storm. The best thing I love about it is that there aren't any parabens, alcohol, preservatives or other artificial fragrances. Plus, it's biodegradable. The thing that makes Skinnies stands out is the fact that it isn't mixed with water like other sunscreens. This means that a little goes a long way.

5. Beauty By Earth

My last pick for a great natural sunscreen is Beauty By Earth. It's non-greasy formula makes it go on effortlessly. I also love that it couples as a moisturiser for the face so you can minimise how many products you're putting on. Because of this combination it also works on fine lines and wrinkles as well as being a great sun protector. Their tinted facial sunscreen is also a DD cream and is SPF 20.

So, there you have it. Let me know what you think of these and whether there's one you prefer to all the rest. They all have their pros and cons which is why it's great to give them all a go and see which one suits your skin the best. Happy sunbathing!
